Quarter 2 Performance Task.

As we approach the end of the second marking period, students have been practicing the skills used in our non-fiction unit to begin a research paper. The beauty of this assignment is that the students are able to choose whatever they would like to research as long as it is a high level thinking question. In order to generate these questions, we learned and began using the Question Formulating Technique or the "QFT".

Students learned this technique while working in small groups. We started by traveling around the room looking at photographs. When they found a photo they were interested in, they were asked to write down as many questions they had about what they were looking at. Students had 3 minutes to generate as many questions they could on post-it notes. At the end of those 3 minutes, they were then asked to categorize the questions. Through process of elimination, students sifted through their questions to find one that could really be answered in depth.

This same method was used with a topic of their choice when we began working on our research paper performance task. Students were able to choose any topic they wanted and then completed the "QFT" to come up with a high level, researchable question.

Once they had their question, Mrs. Rogers helped each student become familiar with the school database and we were off researching! Below are some images of the students using this new skill of finding credible sources and using the" citation tool" feature to create their bibliography page.

I am so excited to see how they turn out!
